少しばかり不思議な数がある。$142857$がそれだ。

電卓があれば簡単に試せるが

と、実に見事な結果になる。何が見事かといえば、答えはすべて$142857$の数字の並びを巡回させているだけだ。しかも巡回を余すことなく使っている。気になって次の掛け算、つまり

をやってみると、答は$999999$になってしまう。どうしたことだろう。

秘密は$1/7$にある。$1/7$は

$\displaystyle \frac{1}{7} = 0.142857142857\dots$

なので、両辺を$7$倍すれば、当然

$1 = 0.999999\dots$
\end{quote}
である。$142857\times7 = 999999$ は、循環節を一部抜き出しているにすぎない。

似たようなもので$076923$をあげよう。これは
