(「三角関数がなんぼのもんじゃい」からの続き)

三角比が、分からない辺の長さや角の大きさを求めたり、三角形の面積を求めたりすることに有効なことは話しました。と同時に、三角比がもう一つ大事な役割を担っていることも指摘しておきました。ここでは、三角比が担う重要な役割について話しておきましょう。

その前に、これに関連することなので、「比」が果たす役割について述べなくてはなりません。三角比も名前の通り比の一種です。したがって、比が果たす役割と三角比の役割には共通のものがあります。

では、比とはどういう性質のものなのでしょう。私たちは比較的多くの場面で比を使っていると思います。具体的な場面は述べませんが

という形で書かれることが多いはずです。つまり比は、二つの値を\textbf{比べる}ものであり、比べた状況を分かりやすく記述したのが(\ref{ratio})です。しかし、比の表し方はもう一つあります。言葉を選べば、比の表し方ではなく「比の値」と呼ぶべきものです。比の値とは (\ref{ratio}) を

で計算したものを指します。これは小数にすると

であるので、ひとつの値でしかありません。

「比」といえば二つの値で表すものなのに、「比の値」といえば一つの値になるのです。実はこれが、比が果たす重要な役割なのです。

皆さんは、数直線や座標平面は知っているでしょう。数直線上の点は、ある一つの実数値に対応するし、座標平面上の点は、ある一組の座標に対応しています。すなわち、数直線上の点を表すには$m$だけで十分ですが、座標平面上の点を表すには$(a,~b)$としなくてはなりません。しかしながら、ある条件下では座標平面上の点を$m$だけで表すことが可能です。

それは$(a,~b)$を$\dfrac{b}{a} = m$の値として表すことです。ただし、こうすると$(2,~3)$も$(6,~9)$も同じ$m = \dfrac{3}{2}$になるので、座標平面上の点と$m$の値が一対一に対応するわけではありません。しかし少なくとも、座標平面上のあるグループの点と$m$が一対一に対応します。この場合、座標平面上のあるグループの点とは、傾き$\dfrac{b}{a}$である直線上の点の集合です。これにより、一次元的な広がりをもつ直線(の傾き)を、次元をもたない一点(数$m$)に対応させることができるのです。

言わば、比が$1$次元と$0$次元の橋渡し役を務めているということです。そして三角比も橋渡し役を務めているのです。では、三角比は何と何の橋渡しをしているのでしょうか。それは、角度と実数値の橋渡し役です。周知の通り角度は$0$\textdegree から$360$\textdegree までの値をとります。三角関数を考えると、様々な大きさの角度を扱うものですが、いまは比の値を強調して話したいので、角度は直角三角形の内角がとり得る$90$\textdegree までにしておきます。

さて、「三角関数がなんぼのもんじゃい」の章で、斜辺を$1$とする直角三角形において、斜辺に対する底辺比と垂辺比を与えました。先に結論めいたことを言えば、このときの表の値が「三角比」だったのです。あれ? さっき、三角比は角度と実数値の橋渡し役と書いたわりには、登場する実数値が$1$以内の数で収まっていますね。これでは、とても実数値全体との橋渡しとは言えないですね。でも、数字の流れを見て想像を十分に働かせると、表にない角度、例えば$-1$\textdegree へ向かう角度や、$91$\textdegree から先の角度で辺の比が負になりそうな気配があります。直角三角形で$-1$\textdegree や$91$\textdegree などの角度は意味をなさないけれど、数の計算が負の数を取り入れたように、直角三角形の角度に負の角を定義してもおかしくありません。事実、そういう流れになって立派に橋渡し役を務めるのですが、ここでは$0$\textdegree から$90$\textdegree の角度について、三角比の橋渡しの様子を述べることにします。

三角比を考えるとき、斜辺の長さを$1$にしておくと都合がよいことは話しました。そのとき、直角以外の角を一つ決めることで、$3$辺の長さが自動的に決まってしまいます。ここで直角三角形を、直角と注目角の間の辺が底辺になるように置いてみます。すると残りの辺が垂辺となりますが、今後は注目角$\theta$に相い\textbf{対}する\textbf{辺}の意味を込めて「対辺」と呼ぶことにします。

さて、直角三角形の辺の比ですが、以前は$3$辺をまとめた連比で表しました。しかし、連比を実数値にするわけにいきませんから、連比では角度と実数の橋渡しになりません。そこで$2$辺の比で考えることにします。と言っても、$2$辺の比は全部で$6$種類考えられます。それは

ところで、(\ref{reverseTriRatio})は(\ref{regularTriRatio})の逆数になっているに過ぎませんから、三角比は主に(\ref{regularTriRatio})を考えるだけで十分です。したがって三角比と言えば、(\ref{regularTriRatio})を指すことがほとんどです(この「三角比の表」は最後に掲げてあります)。

さて、ここまでの話で、三角比が角度と実数の橋渡しをしている様子がわかると思います。ただ、$\cos\theta$と$\sin\theta$を見ただけでは、とても実数全体に橋渡しをしているように感じないでしょう。そう感じたら$\tan\theta$に注目してください。$\tan\theta$の値は三角比の表より、$0$から$+\infty$までの実数値に対応していることがわかるでしょう\footnote{$90$\textdegree に近いところで$\sin\theta = 1.0000$となっていますが、これは四捨五入した$1.0000$です。一方、$45$\textdegree に対する$\tan\theta$の値は、ぴったり$1$です。}。ここには負の値がないので、実数全体という感じに乏しいのは仕方ありません。それは、角度を$0$\textdegree から$90$\textdegree に限って考えたからです。しかし、三角比が三角関数に拡張されたときに負の値が現れるので、そのとき三角比の役割が実感できると思います。

いまは$\tan\theta$だけを例にとり、角度と実数値の関わりを話したに過ぎません。この先、三角関数に親しむようになれば、角度と実数値の関わりがさらに身近なものとなっていくのです。直角三角形の辺の比という、限られた世界の数学が関数へと昇華することで、実数と三角関数が織り成す世界を見ることができます。そのためには、私たちが抱いている角度の概念を、少々修正する必要があるのです。($\Rightarrow$続きは「一周$360$\textdegree の不自然さ」にて。)
