This is a traditional and unsolved question in ARC. However, same question can be raised for the Puffin paperback
version published in 1960's. These paperback books of AR have a cover of AR drawing with colour wash on top, too.
Interestingly, "Peter Duck" of the Puffin edition and "Peter Duck" of Iwanami edition use the same drawing but
different colours. Japanese Wild Cat is green but Puffin's is yellow!?
